Esattamente cinquantacinque anni fa l’Atletico Madrid sfidava, nei quarti di finale della Coppa del Coppe, i tedeschi del Borussia Dortmund
L’incontro venne disputato a Madrid e terminò con un pareggio per 1-1. Al ritorno in Germania i tedeschi ebbero la meglio proseguendo poi il cammino che li portò a conquistare il trofeo ai danni del Liverpool che eliminò la Juventus al primo turno e venne sconfitto dai tedeschi nella finale giocata all’Hampden Park di Glasgow. L’Atletico Madrid di quella sconfitta trasse lezione tant’è che riuscì, nella Liga spagnola, a spezzare l’egemonia del Real Madrid e del Barcellona aggiudicandosi, dopo un digiuno di ben quindici anni, il campionato. Il presidente della squadra era Vicente Calderon che legò alle sorti dei “colchoneros” il suo nome tanto da avere il vecchio stadio adiacente al rio Manzanares a lui intitolato. Nelle sue fila, invece, militava Luis Aragones, giocatore protagonista alla fine dei sessanta – inizio anni settanta delle vittorie dell’Atletico Madrid tra cui quella nella Coppa Intercontinentale conseguita nel 1974. In seguito Aragones allenò anche l’Atletico prima di passare alla guida della nazionale spagnola con cui vinse, nel 2008, i campionati europei.
Il gagliardetto consegnato dal capitano dell’Atletico a quello del Borussia è il caratteristico scudo a strisce verticali bianco e rosse con al centro il simbolo della squadra e le iscrizioni con i dettagli relativi alla partita.

ATLETICO MADRID – CUP WINNERS’ CUP 1965 – 1966
Exactly fifty-five years ago Atletico Madrid challenged the Germans of Borussia Dortmund in the quarter-finals of the Cup Winners’ Cup. The match was held in Madrid and ended in a 1-1 draw. On their return to Germany, the Germans prevailed and then continued the path that led them to win the trophy against Liverpool, who eliminated Juventus in the first round and was defeated by the Germans in the final played at Hampden Park in Glasgow. Atletico Madrid drew lessons from that defeat so much that they managed, in the Spanish Liga, to break the hegemony of Real Madrid and Barcelona by winning the championship after fifteen years. The president of the team was Vicente Calderon who linked his name to the fate of the “colchoneros” so much that the old stadium adjacent to the Rio Manzanares was named after him. Among its ranks, amongst others, Luis Aragones a leading player in the late sixties – early seventies of Atletico Madrid’s victories including that in the Intercontinental Cup achieved in 1974. Later Aragones also coached Atletico before passing at the Spanish national team with which he won the European championships in 2008.
The pennant handed over by the captain of Atletico to that of Borussia is the characteristic white and red vertical striped shield with the symbol of the team in the center and the inscriptions with the details of the match.
